EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- Tyler ISD Crimestoppers took home a statewide award last week.
The Texas Campus Crimestoppers Conference offers an award for crimestoppers programs who earn recognition through a newspaper article.
The TISD award came after a newspaper article written and published in the Tyler Paper in February 2011.
The article titled "Fighting Campus Crime" showed how the district was moving to improve and promote crimestoppers.
Officer Andrew Whitfield said students turn in half of all information on crimes happening on campus, including two incidents involving students who brought guns to school last year.
"It makes me feel good that people, even at the national level, are seeing what kids do and they're proud of their work," Whitfield said.
Students do have several options when contacting the Campus Crimestoppers including the website and just by picking up the phone and making a phone call.
This is the second time the department and district have been nominated for a statewide award. Last year, the Tyler ISD Crimestoppers Program was nominated for the Regional Exceptional Service Award by the National Association of School Resource Officers.
