Food for Thought: techniques to nurture healthy habits in kids and families

The Tyler Public Library and St. Paul Children's Foundation are joining forces to offer a free continuing education workshop for child care workers, teachers and parents. "Early Childhood and Obesity: What can you do?" is set for Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m. to noon in the Library's Taylor Auditorium.

Valerie Smith, M.D., pediatrician and Jackie Erlandson, R. D., registered dietician, both on staff with St. Paul Children's Foundation in Tyler, will lead the workshop which is Texas Child Care Licensing Agency approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education.

Dr. Smith and Erlandson will offer a factual and practical session on how teachers, child care workers and parents can nurture healthy habits in children and their families for the prevention of obesity. Some of the topics covered are:

  • What does obesity look like in Texas and what are its effects on our community?
  • What are the factors involved in the development of obesity?
  • What can early childhood settings do to make a difference?
  • Practical tips for changing the balance toward a healthy generation in child care settings, including programs and resources available through the Tyler Public Library.
  • Advocacy training and community challenges.
