Childhood obesity will give kids shorter life span than parents

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The current generation of American children is the first that will have a shorter life span than their parents, and it's all because of childhood obesity.

It was something child care workers, teachers and parents learned at a free workshop at the Tyler Public Library.

The library and St. Paul Children's Foundation hosted the education workshop. St. Paul pediatricians and dieticians explained how childhood obesity can be prevented, and why diabetes is so detrimental to our society.

M.D., pediatrician Valerie Smith works for the St. Paul Children's Foundation. She spoke at the workshop Saturday and said, "The whole basis of the American dream is that we do better for our children, so they have more opportunities. If we don't help them do something to be healthy, they wont have those opportunities."

Speakers said that one third of the American children born in 2000 and beyond will be diagnosed with diabetes at some point, so the time for change is now.
