Fit City Success: Rose Heights Church Weight Loss Challenge progress

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- All Kevin Roper needed was a message from his pastor to change 45 years of not being fit.

"A pastor who stood in the pulpit and said not only am I going to challenge myself, I'm challenging the church," Roper said. "It just gave me the push I needed."

Now, three days a week, Roper starts his mornings at the community life center.

"The first week I was not appreciative of the challenge," he said. "It was very difficult."

The build up of energy and the excitement about meeting goals helped Roper stay on track. And getting an accountability partner was also a crucial piece to the puzzle.

"He graciously decided to help me train," he said. "He showed me the proper use of the machines, what to do and not to do."

Roper also downloaded the app "Couch to 5K" to his phone.

"And in about three weeks, I added walking and running to the weight training and man, that's made a big difference."

Roper didn't just commit to workouts. This is a total transformation.

"My wife is the home nutrition Nazi," he said. "She has completely gutted the fridge and cabinets. Fresh meals with fresh ingredients has made a huge difference."

In two short months, Roper has seen tremendous benefits.

"I've pretty much been able to come off high blood pressure meds," he said.

And, he's lost about 30 pounds.

He doesn't want to be specific about that because the weight loss competition is still going on.

"I do feel some excitement coming to the gym, knowing it's going to be tough and I'll be drained," he said. "But I always tell myself... you did it again."

Roper's family, including his kids, are all involved now. Roper said he was 16, the last time he weighed under 200 pounds. At the end of the challenge that's where he's hoping to be, again.
