Fit City Success: 10 in 10 weigh-in

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- More than 100 East Texans joined the 10 in 10 Challenge. It's been a life changing fitness journey for some including the first person challenged, Nelson Clyde.

Clyde got one more spin session in before the big weigh-in. But, several weeks ago this was not a place you would've seen him.

"It's challenged me to do more than I would have done otherwise," he said. "I would not have tried spin class. I tried that in the middle of this competition and really got hooked."

When Clyde first started the challenge, he weighed 281 pounds and was taking high blood pressure medication.

"I have really watched my food intake and been careful about what I was eating," he said.

He also upped his workouts from two days a week to five.

"You see all those people who are very fit and think that's unachievable for me," he said. "You have to remember who you are and where you are and what you can do. Your competition is really just with yourself."

Even before the final weigh-in, Clyde lost 9.5 inches. And according to the official scale, Clyde dropped 15.6 pounds during the 10 in 10 Challenge.

He and Tyler City Manager Mark McDaniel held each other accountable.

"When you care about somebody as a friend, you want to help them out," McDaniel said.

McDaniel's competitive side helped him lose 19.8 pounds during the challenge; working out more and eating healthier.

"No point in me telling people they should be doing this if I am not doing this myself," he said.

In the end, Clyde gets to keep his hair, but it's the weight he's lost and the medicine he no longer takes. He hopes this will help others find fit city success.

"I hope I can be an encouragement to others in the same way those people have been an encouragement to me."

Almost 200 pounds were collectively shed in the challenge. As a result, several corporations have started wellness programs.
