Man identified in aircraft crash

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY (KYTX) - The man that died following an accident involving a powered parachute crash in Nacogdoches County Sunday afternoon has been identified as 66 year old Roby Jernigan of Garrison.

Sheriff Thomas Kerss said Jernigan was taking off--in what is essentially a go-cart with a large fan on the back suspended from a parachute--from a field on his property when a gust of wind blew him into a nearby tree.

"Once the chute caught in those trees, it propelled him on into the limbs," Kerss said.
"He tried to exit the craft and then fell to the ground as well. He was conscious. He was able to describe the fact that he had neck and back pain."

Kerss said Jernigan was an experienced pilot who was properly qualified to fly the powered parachute, and had quite a bit of experience with it.

"He's probably flown hundreds of times with no mis-haps, and then one strong gust of wind came at the wrong time."

Jernigan was taken to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and died later that day.

Investigators are not sure if the crash into the tree or the fall out of the tree after the crash was what caused his fatal injuries.
