6-year-old boy sets up lemonade stand to pay for dad's cancer treatments

Posted: Updated:

GLADEWATER (KYTX) -- A young entrepreneur is trying to help his dad fight a rare form of cancer - and he hasn't even finished kindergarten. CBS 19's Abby Broyles shows how a six-year old boy started his own business from his home in Gladewater to help pay for his dad's cancer treatments.

He's six years old, he has a big heart, and a community behind him.

"It's lots of work to do," Drew Cox said.

Drew Cox was hard at work Saturday running his lemonade stand at his home in Gladewater.

It's a fundraiser he came up with for his dad, Randy.

In February, Randy was diagnosed with cancer.

"I think he understands that his daddy is sick and that it takes a lot, not just money, to take care of things," Tonya Cox said.

Randy is undergoing chemo therapy treatments in Tyler.

"He knows that Daddy's gone a lot and every time Daddy goes it takes a little bit more money," Tonya said.

That's why last week, Drew told his mom, Tonya, he wanted to do something to help.

"He has a great heart and a special place in his heart for his Daddy," Tonya said.

Even with insurance, his family is facing tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills.

"I just made this because I wanted to help him pay his bills," Drew said.

And Drew's plan to help was a big hit. His lemonade stand had cars parked up and down his street all day.

"I just like that everybody came," Drew said.

"We never thought it was going to be this big, I just thought it was going to be a fun Saturday afternoon with the boys," Tonya says, "it's incredible."

Drew's thankful to everyone who stopped by Saturday to show their support for him and his dad.

"Thank you for everyone that's coming here," Drew said.

Drew's family tells us Randy will begin his fourth round of chemo therapy in two weeks. And in May, his doctors will determine if he'll need further treatment.
