Sexual assault investigation underway in Morris County

Posted: Updated:

MORRIS COUNTY (KYTX) -- A Lone Star teenager is behind bars for aggravated sexual assault. CBS 19's Abby Broyles spoke with the victim's family today and has more on the investigation from our Longview newsroom.

18-year-old Kevin Coffey was arrested Saturday for aggravated sexual assault. Police say he attacked a 17-year-old girl. CBS 19 spoke with her family off camera today, in order to protect the girl's identity. They say she was attacked at gunpoint Saturday.

Lone Star Police, in Morris County, aren't releasing much information about the attack. They say it happened at a home in Lone Star. The 17-year-old girl's family tells CBS 19 she was at a friend's house overnight Saturday. They say 18-year old Kevin Coffey, who got inside because he knew the homeowner, walked into the room where she sleeping alone and attacked her. They say he sexually assaulted her at gunpoint and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. Someone in the home called police, and officers arrested Coffey.

Coffey was booked into the Morris County Jail Saturday on felony charges for aggravated sexual assault.

Coffey is being held on a $10,000 bond in the Morris County Jail. Family members tell us they're concerned because they asked the justice of the peace who arraigned Coffey for an emergency protective order, but they say it wasn't granted. CBS 19 spoke with Justice of the Peace Betty Johnson today, and she declined to comment on the charges.

The girl's family tells us she is recovering at home tonight.  The Lone Star Police Department is still investigating. The case has not been turned over yet to the Morris County District Attorney.
