We live in the South, so some of us may have a Southern accent, but would you consider saying "goodbye" to "howdy, y'all"?
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee was going to offer a speech class for its workers next month to do just that, until it got canceled.

TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler ISD wants to know how and why an Orr Elementary School student brought a gun to school Monday. It wasn't loaded, but the situation is causing a scare.

The Orr Elementary student's name and grade are not being released right now.

Fortunately the child's teacher found the gun and when she did, TISD says she did the right thing.

Laura Jackson with TISD says, "The teacher immediately contacted her principal who came straight to the room removed the unloaded weapon, as well as the student to talk to the student about it."

Leon Walton lives right across the street from Orr Elementary, where he used to mentor students in 4th and 5th grade.

He says, "About 2 years ago I worked with them, and they had some pretty good kids over there and I never thought that kids that small would bring a gun to school!"

While Tyler ISD investigates why this happened, Walton hopes parents will take this scare seriously.

"Watch the kids more often and watch what they're doing," he says.

Tyler ISD is asking parents to do that as well.

:To stay involved with their students, and really investigate and check out what's in their belongings before the students come to school," Jackson says.

CBS 19 talked to several parents of Orr students Monday. They didn't want to appear on camera but say naturally they're upset by this. TISD wants parents to know the child was taken off campus Monday and any punishment depends on the investigation.

The school district is not saying what kind of gun the child brought onto the campus. Further investigation will determine whether the student's parents will face any charges.
