Schizophrenia drug may help fight cancer

(CBS) - A drug used to treat schizophrenia may also help in the fight against cancer. Canadian researchers found the anti-psychotic drug "thioridazine" killed cancer cells without the toxic side effects of chemotherapy. Hundreds of drugs were screened to see which ones were effective against cancer stem cells. Doctors are now planning trials to test thioridazine on leukemia patients.

(CBS)- A healthy dose of sunshine may help lower the risk of stroke. It's the Vitamin D that's good for you. Researchers at the University of Hawaii followed more than 7-thousand Japanese-American men. They found those who took the least amount of Vitamin D had a 22 percent higher risk of stroke. Besides sunshine, Vitamin D can also be found in supplements, fortified milk, fatty fish and eggs.

Researchers in Oregon found that turmeric effects a gene which boosts the immune system - helping to fight off sickness and disease. Previous research showed the spice may slow the spread of cancer and help prevent Alzheimer's Disease. Turmeric has been used as a medicine in India for more than 25-hundred years.

(CNN) -If you suffer from asthma, you may want to be careful at work. A new study by the CDC finds that about nine-percent of all asthma cases in the U.S. are made worse by workplace environments. In a state by state analysis, Florida had the highest rate of the occupational illness. Researchers say work-related asthma can be prevented with a better understanding of the causes and prevention of the disease.
