Egrets Invade Bastrop County

Posted: Updated:

BASTROP COUNTY, TX (CNN) - You can't always get rid of a noisy neighbor. That's the problem some Southeast Texas residents are dealing with. They are living next to some very noisy, smelly, but federally protected birds.

In Bastrop County, thousands upon thousands of "Cattle Egrets" are making themselves at home in a residential neighborhood. Greg Creacy is a wildlife biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife. He says normally, the birds set up their colonies near lakes. The birds are also leaving behind a big mess for residents to clean up.

"It's the first time that we're aware that there's been a nesting colony in this residential area. They are coming together to build their nests, lay their eggs, you know, hatch their young."

The birds are doing some good -- they eat massive quantities of insects. Luckily, the people in Bastrop County won't have to deal with these birds too much longer. They should be gone by late July or early August.
