East Texas ranks least friendly in state for small business

Posted: Updated:

MARSHALL (KTBS) - It seems the Lone Star State enjoys some company. A recent survey gave Texas high marks as one of the friendliest in the nation, for small business. But, that same survey says East Texas is the least friendly part of the state.

The study, by thumbtack.com and The Kauffman Foundation surveyed 6,000 businesses nationwide and used criteria such as tax codes, regulations, employment and training programs to come up with its rankings.

"Texas has always been known for our innovation and our can do spirit," said Donna Maisel, Executive Director for the Marshall Economic Development Corporation. "We offer incentives for them (businesses) and counseling. We feel like Marshall's doing everything it can to be pro business."

Maisel says the survey may be splitting hairs when dividing the state. She says East Texas is made up of more than 90 percent of small businesses and they're proud of it.

In response to the study showing East Texas being the most unfriendly in the state, Maisel said, "That may be a perception issue as well as not having a wide range of responses."
