Aspirin reduces risk of acute kidney failure

(CBS) - Taking aspirin before heart surgery can head- off a serious post-operative complication. Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University found that taking aspirin for five days before surgery reduces the risk of acute kidney failure. The study looked at patients undergoing heart bypass or valve surgery. Those taking aspirin were 50-percent less likely to suffer kidney failure.

(CBS) - A lack of may be linked to obesity. A study at U.C. Berkeley found that sleep deprivation impairs brain activity in the frontal lobe, which controls behavior and complex choices. The results suggest that sleep loss may prevent the brain from making appropriate food choices.

(CBS) - A separate study found that sleep deprivation can also lead to higher anxiety levels. Researchers asked a group of healthy adults to anticipate an emotional event. Then they took brain scans first after a good night's sleep, and then after a night of sleep deprivation. They found that after being deprived of sleep, the participants' anxiety about the upcoming event jumped by as much as 60-percent.

(CBS) - Millions of young adults are forgoing necessary care and treatment because of rising health care costs. A commonwealth fund report says 41-percent of young adults between ages 19 and 29 failed to get medical care in a recent 12-month period because of cost. They are not filling prescriptions, skipping recommended tests or treatments, avoiding doctor visits and failing to get the specialist care they need. Doctors are also noticing that young adults stop listening to medical advice once they hear the cost of treatment. Among uninsured adults, the number rose to 60- percent.
