Community remembers victims in White Oak crash, funeral services scheduled

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) -- A community is remembering the lives of a Gladewater man and his granddaughter, both killed in a crash last week in White Oak. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday morning in Longview. CBS 19's Abby Broyles spoke with the family's pastor today and joins us now from Crossroads Community Church in Longview.

Funeral services will be held at Crossroads Community Church in Longview Tuesday, where Kennedi Burks's family has gone to church for years. Today people in the community are remembering the lives of Brent Young and little 7-month old Kennedi, both killed in last week's crash in White Oak.

A makeshift memorial stands outside Crossroads Community Church with a picture of Dillon and Lauren Burks, and their 7-month old daughter, Kennedi. She died, along with her grandfather, Brent Young, after a crash last week in white oak.

"Immediately upon these events happening, our church organized prayer and a prayer chain for about 36 hours," Pastor Bo Bolding said.

Pastor Bo Bolding has been close with the family for years. He and other church members were with them over the weekend to offer prayers and support.

"It was amazing for the whole Burks family to come to church here on Sunday and be here and just begin a process of healing," Bolding said.

They're healing after a crash that killed 45-year old Brent Young and 7-month old Kennedi. It happened Thursday on Highway 80 and Hollingsworth. Police say a driver rear ended the family's car with his pick-up, pushing the car into oncoming traffic.

Mary Young, Brent's wife, was also in the car, and she's home from the hospital tonight.

Their son, Cash, goes Union Grove High School. Superintendent Brian Gray released a statement to CBS 19 Monday, saying, "Union Grove School is a very close-knit community and our hearts are broken. We will try to be there anyway we can and support Cash's family during this tragedy."

"Pray for them and talk with them, share life with them, and that's when they'll need us in the months ahead," Bolding said.

Funeral services for Brent and Kennedi will be held together here at Crossroads Community Church at 10:00 Tuesday morning.

White Oak police say 24-year-old Jared Tuel was driving the pick-up that rear ended the car. he had minor injuries.

Police are still investigating, and no one is charged at this point.

We're told Mary Young is home from the hospital tonight. The driver of a third car involved, Patsy Harrell, is in the hospital in good condition.
