Palestine Police Department:
PALESTINE (KYTX) - On 06/182/2012 at approximately 9:15 PM Palestine Police Officer Jason Lewis was traveling in the 2900 block South Loop 256 in Palestine. Officer Lewis came up on a subject lying on the side of the roadway. An ambulance was already on the scene. It appeared that an accident of some type had taken place on the shoulder of the roadway. Officer Lewis stopped and learned that a pedestrian walking along the road had been hit by a vehicle. Officer Lewis also learned that the vehicle in question had left the scene without giving aid to the victim.
The victim was identified as 51 year old Tamayo Marcelo. Marcelo was transported to the Palestine Regional Medical Center by ambulance. After being stabilized, Marcelo was transferred by air to Trinity Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler.
A friend that was walking with Marcelo witnessed that incident. The second subject was not injured during this incident. The witness advised police that a truck had hit his friend and left the scene.
There was also a second witness who advised officers that she had witnessed the incident. The witness saw the truck strike Marcelo, come to a stop and then leave the scene. This witness was able to follow the truck to the local hospital.
Officers were able to identify Colby Dwayne Sims age 22 of Fairfield as the driver of the truck. Sims was questioned by police regarding the accident, and cooperated with the investigation. The case is still under investigation, however, detectives believe that no additional persons of interest are sought at this time. Any witnesses who have not already been identified are asked to contact the Det. Sgt. James Muniz as soon as possible.
Upon conclusion, the case will be forwarded to the Anderson County District Attorney's Office for consideration.
The last update on the victim indicated that he was in critical but stable condition.
