UPDATE: Tyler stabbing victim stable, police investigate

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A Tyler man is still in the hospital after being stabbed Monday night outside his home.

It happened around 9:00 in the 300 block of Wells Street in Tyler, near Donnybrook. Police say 39-year-old Eldon Wilks was stabbed after getting into a fight with another man.

"He was bleeding horribly bad."

Anthony Thomas walked out of his house Monday night to find his next door neighbor, Eldon Wilks, lying in a pool of blood.

"He said he got stabbed and he sat down on the ground. I mean he really thought he was going to die. That's what he kept saying. He needed the hospital and he started telling everybody he loved them," Thomas says.

Wilk's wife did not want to go on camera but she did tell CBS 19 what led to her husbands stabbing.

She says a family member, who the Wilks have told to stay away from the area, was the passenger in a car that drove by Monday night around 9:00.

Police say Wilks' 14-year-old stepson was riding his bike home from a friend's house when the driver of the car said something to him.

Wilks' wife says that's when her husband went outside to confront the driver, who she says threatened her son.

Don Martin with the Tyler Police says, "They got into a physical altercation with that other person outside. During the altercation the suspect had a knife and actually cut him numerous times and there were a couple puncture wounds."

Wilks' wife tells CBS 19 that her husband was cut or stabbed at least four times. She says one of those cuts was at least four inches long.

"He said he got stabbed in the back and you could tell," Thomas says, motioning to his back. "He had his hand right here and everything was just coated. It looked horrible."

A trail of blood shows where Wilks' stepson dragged him to the car.

"He was going to take him to the hospital, then the ambulance showed up on the scene and transported him to the hospital," Martin says.

Thomas says he's worried that such a violent fight happened next door.

"I kind of don't want the kids coming outside," he said.

Wilks' wife says her husband had surgery last night to deal with some internal bleeding. He is still in the hospital, but police say he's now stable.

Police say they do have an idea of who the two men involved are, but are not releasing that information until they wrap up the rest of the investigation.
