Weight loss surgery may reverse kidney disease

(CBS) - Weight loss surgery may do more than just help you lose weight. It may also reverse the effects of kidney disease. Doctors in Taiwan looked at several obese people with the condition. They found a year after bariatric surgery those patients saw significant improvements in kidney function. Doctors say weight loss lowers blood pressure and blood sugar levels -- the two main culprits of kidney disease.

(CBS) - A new study finds moderate drinking during early pregnancy doesn't seem to hurt the child later on. But researchers say it's safest not to chance it. Danish researchers followed pregnant mothers who had 8 drinks or less a week during their first tri-mester. Those children were tested five years later. Their IQ, attention span and organizational skills were similar to other kids. Researchers also say its probably best for women to avoid alcohol during pregnancy.

(CBS) - People who live in sunny areas are less likely to get pancreatic cancer - especially if they're fair skinned. Doctors in Australia followed 700 people and found those exposed to the highest levels of sunlight had a 24 percent lower risk of developing pancreatic cancer. And those with the most sensitive skin had a 49 percent lower risk. Doctors believe Vitamin D from sun exposure plays a role, but say more studies are needed to determine the exact link.
