Consumers lean towards antibiotic-free meat

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- A cry for antibiotic-free meat.

A new study by Consumer Reports Magazine shows 86 percent of consumers say they want meat raised without antibiotics in their local supermarket. 60 Percent say they'd pay more for it.

Farmers started using antibiotics in livestock in the 50s because they found the animals grew bigger, faster with less feed.

Public health experts say the drugs may be contributing to the rise in antibiotic-resistant infections in humans.

Meat and poultry raised without drugs are available and labeled organic.
