CHANDLER (KYTX) - Chandler could soon go partially wet with the sale of beer and wine. All signatures needed for an alcohol election in November are turned in and verified.
John Camper with the "Buy Chandler First" committee says 272 signatures were required for each of the alcohol petitions they turned in.
"We had more than enough people that signed it." he said. "And, we had even more people who wanted to sign it, but didn't live inside city limits, or weren't registered to vote."
The first petition for the sale of beer and wine at stores for off-premise consumption got 302 signatures. That only applies to grocery stores and convenience stores. That means stores selling liquor and beer and wine only will not be allowed for now.
The second petition got 300 signatures in favor of allowing beer, wine and mixed drinks at restaurants.
Brandon Carty is in favor of both petitions.
"I think it's good." he said. "I mean, it'd definitely boost the economy around here. I mean, people are driving 10 miles down the road to get a drink when they could be getting it at local stores here."
Others want Chandler to stay completely dry.
"I disapprove of it." said David Barnett. "I really think that the city should stay clean."
"Not deeply concerned about the opposition." said camper. "It's been expected, but not overwhelming. So, we're really pleased with the support we've had."
