Dallas County records first case of West Nile

Posted: Updated:

DALLAS COUNTY (CBS) - The first human case of West Nile Virus has been reported in Dallas County.

The case was confirmed in a Richardson resident. There was only one case in Dallas County last year, none the year before. Doctors say West Nile can hit anyone at any age. These Dallas moms say they are taking extra precautions to help keep their families safe from the virus. It's a message county leaders hope hits every home.

"We're very alarmed, we're very concerned; we've seen a number of positive mosquito pools around Dallas County. That leads us to believe that we're in for a long summer," says Zachary Thompson, Health & Human Services Director.

There are some things you can do to help eliminate mosquitoes. Wear DEET if you're going to be outside. Eliminate puddles of water where mosquitoes breed. Spraying your yard with chemicals is also a good idea.
