UPDATE (KYTX) -- The large low pressure area just north of the Yucatan Peninsula is showing signs of becoming better organized. The National Hurricane Center now says this system has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 48 hours. It is moving slowly northward into the central Gulf of Mexico.

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - A large area of low pressure near the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is producing showers and thunderstorms from the Yucatan northeastward to southern Florida.

This system has a near 50-50 chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours as it moves slowly into the central Gulf of Mexico.

Interests along the entire U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico are advised to monitor this system for the possibility that tropical storm conditions could threaten them through the weekend and into next week.
