Six months after the sudden death of Panthers head football coach, John Outlaw, the Lufkin ISD school board voted "yes" on a proposal for a permanent memorial. They approved the dedication of John Outlaw Memorial Field at Abe Martin Stadium in memory of the long time Lufkin football coach. He led Lufkin High School to its first state title in 2001 when the Panthers defeated Austin Westlake Chaps, 38-24. Since 2000, only six games have been lost at Abe Martin Stadium, along with 56 victories.
