Tyler police say the driver who hit and killed a man this morning will not face charges.
It happened near the intersection of West Gentry Parkway and the North Loop just after midnight.
Officers say 47-year-old Ruben Orantes was crossing the street outside of the designated crosswalk when he was hit.
Tyler police say the driver who hit him stopped and called 911.
UPDATE 1:56 p.m. Tyler Police Department:
The pedestrian that was struck in the 3200 block of W. Gentry is identified as Ruben Oswald Orantes, H/M, DOB 10/23/1964, of California. Orantes was staying in a local hotel and was working with a tree trimming business.
Investigators believe that Orantes was walking back to his hotel when he was struck crossing Gentry Parkway by a south bound vehicle. Orantes failed to cross the road at a designated cross walk and is determined to be at fault in the crash.
TYLER (KYTX) - FROM TYLER POLICE DEPARTMENT:
On 06-25-2012 at 12:16 am, Tyler Police Officers were dispatched to the 3200 block of West Gentry Parkway in reference to a pedestrian accident. When officers arrived on scene, they learned that a Hispanic male was struck by a passenger car while crossing Gentry Parkway. The victim was transported to ETMC where he passed away a short time later as a result of his injuries. The vehicle that struck the Hispanic male was occupied by one person. The driver of the vehicle sustained no injuries in the crash. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending proper notification of next of kin. A follow-up press release containing the victim's identity will be sent later this morning.
