GREGG COUNTY, TEXAS (KYTX) Fireworks stands across east Texas are now open for business. Because of recent rains, stand owners are expecting a bigger profit this year over last.
Fireworks stand owners say they expect their sales to be up by 50% from last year. With no burn bans listed so far in east Texas, they're ready to help everyone celebrate this 4th of July.
Deborah Kirby is preparing for big crowds. She's been in the fireworks business for more than 30 years. Last year's 4th of July sales were a dud. "It was probably the worst season we've ever had," says Deborah.
Down the road, Jimmy Cox agrees. He says the triple digit heat and burn bans cost them big business last year. "A lot of customers when they'd walk up the first question they'd ask about the burn ban. They wanted to know where they could shoot them," says Jimmy.
Thanks to recent rains east Texans will again be able to do 4th of a July with a bang. "Last year was terrible because of the drought so this year we're hoping to make up some of what we lost. We're looking forward to a big season," says Deborah.
Last year's extensive burn bans meant dealers were left with a lot of left over inventory. This year they're expecting to more than double last year's sales. "We'll actually have 7 people working the stand and from probably 11 in the morning til midnight. Each of those two days we literally will not sit down," says Jimmy.
Most of their business will come July 3rd and 4th. But when mother nature cooperates, it makes the holiday both profitable and fun.
The Texas Forest Service reminds us to keep water nearby and don't set off any fireworks near leaves or other flammable debris. Other safety precautions - only use fireworks with adult supervision and check with your city or county for any specific fireworks restrictions.
