State asking people to limit electricity usage during heat wave

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- The state's electricity regulating group, ERCOT, has issued a voluntary conservation request for everyone in Texas.

ERCOT said there's no reason to worry because the system is in good shape and they have plenty of generating capacity. We didn't get very cold this winter so this week is going to be the first big test since last summer.

"Here in Texas, we have a reliable system and we're used to flipping the switch and the lights coming on," Oncor's Charles Hill said. "But if we get into a situation where the demand outstrips the ability of generators to keep up, then we'll go into a short supply situation like we've seen before."

ERCOT says now is the perfect time to get in the habit of turning the thermostat up when you're away from home. They're also asking all of us to avoid using the dishwasher, the oven and the stove until after 7:00 each night.
