Kilgore Police Department:
KILGORE (KYTX) - On 6/26/2012 Officer Josh Sims was patrolling the area of Layton Street after receiving earlier reports of someone shining a flashlight underneath a vehicle, which was parked in a carport on Layton St.
During the initial police response, officers did not locate anyone but continued to patrol the area throughout the night.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., Officer Sims saw two persons at the same location. The two men entered the home, and Sims stopped to investigate. The home owner advised Sims the two men had permission to be at this residence. Sims identified one of the men as Marcellia Jones.
Shortly after leaving the residence, Sims learned that Jones was currently wanted out of Rusk County for a driving while license invalid warrant. Sims returned to the residence and located Jones outside the residence. Sims was aware that Jones had recently fled from the Kilgore College Police Department.
Sims contacted Jones and attempted to take Jones into custody for the Rusk County warrant. Jones told Sims, "I don't want to go to jail." Sims and Jones briefly struggled at which time Jones assaulted Sims. Sims attempted to subdue Jones with his taser, but it was ineffective.
Jones ran from the location into the backyards of nearby residences.
Officers set up a perimeter and called out K-9 Officer Brady Middlebrooks to track the suspect. In addition to the K-9 Unit, the DPS helicopter was called to assist in the search of Jones.
All attempts to locate Jones were unsuccessful and the search called off.
The Kilgore Criminal Investigative Unit is currently seeking warrants on Jones for assaulting a public servant, resisting arrest and evading arrest with previous convictions.
