East Texas Police Academy instructor dies in motorcycle accident

UPDATE (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A long time East Texas Police Academy instructor was killed this morning in a motorcycle accident.

Police officials have confirmed that Les Ferguson was killed about 8 a.m. today just north of Interstate 20 on Texas Highway 31.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are on the scene and working the accident, but there is no word at this time how the accident happened.

Peace officers from across East Texas are saddened by the news.

"He trained thousands of officers all over Texas. Funeral will be the largest in East Texas law enforcement history," one former lawman told the Tyler Morning Telegraph this morning. "He was a great guy and many in law enforcement are in disbelief this morning."

Ferguson's Facebook page has exploded with prayers, thoughts and remembrances to the instructor so many loved.

"Fourteen years ago as I crossed the doors of East Texas Police Officers Academy, I met an awesome instructor a true friend. It breaks my heart to hear of such a loss to all law enforcement today. Gone but never forgotten. Prayers to all, who know you, and to those that will hear of along the way. Rest in peace Les," Jackie Miers posted on Ferguson's Facebook page.


KILGORE (KYTX) - An East Texas Police Academy instructor was killed in an early morning motorcycle accident on Highway 31 north of Interstate 20.

The victim has been identified as Les Ferguson and was an instructor at the police academy in Kilgore.

DPS tells CBS 19 that the accident happened around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

No word on the cause of the accident.
