SPRING (KHOU) — A woman accused of shooting a mother outside a pediatric center and stealing her baby has been indicted on a capital murder charge.

The indictment alleges that Verna McClain, 30, fatally shot Kala Golden Schuchardt and abducted her 3-day-old baby on April 17. The baby was found unharmed hours later.

Montgomery County investigators said that McClain had been pregnant with her fiancé's child and the couple was planning to marry in May. But after she suffered a miscarriage, investigators said McClain decided to find another child and convince her fiancé it was his.

McClain is a licensed vocational nurse who has three children. She worked for a Harris County staffing agency that hires nurses.

If convicted, McClain could face the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

At this time, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon has not decided whether he will seek the death penalty on McClain.

McClain pleaded not guilty in April and she remains jailed without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.
