Health Alert: New vaccine may help smokers quit

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new vaccine could help smokers quit for good. Researchers in New York tested the vaccine on mice and found a single dose protects against nicotine addiction for an entire lifetime. The vaccine introduces antibodies that attack the nicotine before it reaches the brain or heart. It needs a few more rounds of animal tests before it can be tested on people.

(CBS) - A new study in the Netherlands followed nearly 5-thousand pregnant women. It found that standing for long periods of time may slow the growth rate of a fetus. Women in jobs like sales, childcare and teaching had babies whose heads were about 3-percent smaller than average. For jobs without a lot of standing, researchers found no negative effects from working long hours during pregnancy.

(CBS) - Teenagers who have trouble with their social lives may grow up to face more health risks as adults. Researchers in Sweden focused on adolescents with problematic relationships with their peers and followed them through middle age. They found the group was 36-percent more likely to suffer from metabolic and cardiovascular issues, including obesity and high blood pressure.
