Web Exclusive: Social media survey on teens may surprise you

Posted: Updated:

(CNN/KOCO) - Parents may be surprised what a new survey found when it comes to teens' social lives.  Adults often think of teens as a generation wired, but a recent survey finds some teens have misgivings about interactions becoming increasingly digital.

Some results of the survey from common sense media, a nonprofit that looks at the impact of media and technology on kids, weren't surprising.  90% of teens surveyed said they engage in social media, half of them, every day.  For 68% -- facebook is the tool of choice.

About a quarter consider themselves a "heavy" social media user, using at least two social media tools per day.  Texting is the most popular digital channel teens use every day.

But teens say social media can impact their interactions with one another.  One-third say they'd engaged in digital flirting with someone when they wouldn't have done the same in person.  A quarter reveal they've said something negative about someone online, when they would not have said it to their face.

It appears even the most avid users of technology need a break.  While parents might find it impossible to wrestle a smartphone from a teen's hand, 43% of teens say they wish they could unplug every now and then.  21% wish their parents could do the same.
