Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The retired Tyler dentist police say admitted to shooting and killing his wife is out of jail tonight.

According to jail records, Doctor Bobby Nichols bonded out of the Smith County Jail Tuesday evening. His bond was $750,000.

Nichols has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his wife, 71-year-old Rosiland Nichols.

Tyler police say the 75-year-old longtime East Texas dentist admitted to police around 9:30 Friday night that he shot his wife two times after hours of arguing.

We stopped by Doctor Nichols home today, the same place where the shooting happened, to speak with him.

No one answered the door and no one appeared to be inside.

TYLER (KYTX) - Dr. Bobby Nichols has been charged with the murder of his wife, Mrs. Rosiland Nichols.  Police found her dead at their Tyler home in the 3400 block of Allen Street.

Dr. Nichols is in the Smith County jail. His bond has been set at $750,000.

As retired dentist, Dr.Bobby Nichols, sits in a small jail cell his family is left planning the funeral of his wife of nearly two decades.

"Rosiland was a great woman and Bobby a great guy. This to happen to like it did...we're all in sorrow," said Dr. Rick Coker.

Dr. Rick Coker, a longtime Tyler dentist, knew the couple on a personal level. Dr. Nichols was one of the first dentists to welcome him to Tyler nearly 40 years ago.

"He encouraged me as starting dentist..saying come to Tyler we're having a great time. Always affable and very progressive. very encouraging," said Dr.Coker.

Like many in the community, he never expected to hear police say Dr. Nichols took the life of his own wife

"They seemed happy. I never saw them argue. People don't argue in public. But I never saw them fight at all," said Dr. Coker.

Tyler police said the 75-year-old admitted to police around 9:30 Friday night that he shot his wife.  He even called police himself after it happened.

Police found Rosiland dead at their home on Allen street in Tyler. Police said Dr.Nichols told investigators he got the gun out of his car.

''This is probably something that's been going on for a long time and it's probably been quietly kept behind closed doors," said Brenda McBride.

Licensed clinical social worker Brenda McBride said while the shooting death involving this well respected couple may be a surprise, there were probably always problems in the marriage.

"But what we do know is if this has been happening for a long period of time and there were no police reports, no consequences that he experienced for his behaviors...that's how things escalate," said McBride.

Rosiland was a former Apache Belle, runner up to Miss Tyler, and school teacher who spent time serving the community.

"She was a little more quiet. But always friendly. real pretty lady. pretty smile," said Dr.Coker.

Dr. Nichols described as a kind person, lending his dental expertise to many charitable organizations.

"Everybody knew him. Laughed a lot. He had a very infectious smile," said Dr.Coker.

As friends and family mourn the death of this couple, Dr.Coker says no one is probably more sorry than Dr.Nichols himself.

"Whatever happened, when that passed...I'm sure he was just in just in total denial...total shock he could have done that," said Dr.Coker.

The funeral for Rosiland Nichols will be held Thursday at 1pm at First Christian Church in Tyler.

Rosiland is survived by one daughter from a previous marriage and three grandchildren.
