TYLER (KYTX) - In a week filled with triple digit temperatures, East Texans are looking out for new dangers associated with the heat.
And we can actually burn ourselves on some of the things we touch everyday.
The temperature inside a car we tested today was well over 140 degrees, that's right about the temperature where skin burns.
From swing sets, to water fountains, the heat is building at Faulkner Park.
Mike Hazeltine is a foster parent and keeps a good rule of thumb for his kids.
"If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their skin," says Hazeltine.
Or too hot for little feet.
"Have to have on flip flops on or some kind of shoes on before we go outside," says Judy Brown, who brought her grandsons out to the water park.
Brown made sure to keep her grandkids covered up to fight the rays.
And it's the things you touch the most you may not realize are reaching dangerous temperatures.
Doctor Andrea Ellis with Trinity Mother Frances says be aware.
"The surface of your car, sidewalks, buildings are collecting so much heat. Even just laying against the surface like that, you might burn your skin," says Dr. Ellis.
We know it's hot inside our cars, but don't waste the heat. Use it to bake cookies.
It's still nearly 140 degrees inside the car, and it's not the hottest part of the day. Just a few hours later, you've got a batch of cookies.
But the danger is real, inside cars and out, for pets and people.
"Heat exhaustion is actually when the body starts to lose the ability to cool itself properly," says Dr. Ellis.
Dizziness, fast heart rate, headache are all signs of heat exhaustion. It's time to go in and cool off.
Heat stroke, your body stops sweating, and it's time to head to the emergency room.
So no matter where you are, remember what's hot, and to stay hydrated and cool.
"Water, have to have water," says Brown.
Dr. Ellis also says the recommended 8 glasses of water a day is a minimal, if you're working or exercising in the heat, you need about a one half to a full liter of water for every hour you're outside.
Across the country, there have been 7 children die due to being left in a hot car.
One near the Houston area.
Of course children, anyone over 65 and anyone with medical conditions should be extra careful in the heat.
