Colorado fire evacuees returning home

Posted: Updated:

COLORADO (CNN) -- Three weeks ago the High Park Fire exploded into the foothills west of Fort Collins. Hundreds of homes were destroyed but others were saved.

"So, I know the distance to every place," Robert Job said as he pointed to the nearest fire from his back deck. "That's three-and-a-half miles. I saw the fire had already gotten up to here."

Job was evacuated wondering if his house would survive.

"And, at the end of the day, you know cross our fingers we say okay, let's go get a beer, It missed us today," he said.

Job sees that his home in the Glacier View area was saved by a bulldozer fire line that held its ground in the meadow.

"Once it gets across this, there's nothing to stop it," Job said.

He is one of the lucky ones able to return home now, unlike many of his neighbors across the way.

"And, it's kind of sad because that's one of our landmarks," he said. "But, then you feel sorry for those guys over there."

After three weeks of fire drama, Job thought this day would never come.

"And, then it happened seemed like all of a sudden," he said.

All of a sudden, the fire is fully contained.

"It's almost as if paradise has been violated because it's always gonna be in the back of our mind that all it takes is a spark," he said.
