Millions along the East Coast without power

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Utility crews have been out all night trying to restore power to nearly 2-million people along the East Coast.

Many of them lost power after a severe storm hit over the weekend. The storm, called a derecho, hit without warning Friday. The high winds blew over trees and took down power lines. Power outages are being reported from North Carolina to New Jersey and as far west as Illinois.

Crews say it could be Friday before the power is restored for some customers. Making matters worse, a record setting heatwave means many of the people without power could be in danger, especially the most vulnerable such as the sick and elderly.
