ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - There is growing concern in the health community about the West Nile Virus, as human cases continue to pop up across North Texas even earlier in the summer than usual. Arlington is one of two area cities reporting new human cases. The City of Arlington is going to leave door hangers on homes Friday, reminding residents about ways to control mosquito population and manage exposure.
More than a dozen people have been infected in Dallas County, Tarrant County and Denton County over the past month.
Arlington reported two human cases of West Nile on Thursday while Farmers Branch reported just one. And officials in Grapevine revealed multiple locations that have tested positive for mosquitos carrying the virus. Cities have already began notifying schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, golf courses and other facilities.
Meanwhile, crews in Highland Village sprayed for mosquitos early Friday morning after a confirmed case of West Nile in that area. Dallas will spray neighborhoods in the south, southeast and north sectors of the city, where 28 mosquito pools have tested positive for the potentially harmful virus.
The best way to avoid the virus is to avoid mosquitos. While that may be easier said than done, North Texans should remember the four D's to help decrease potential exposure.
