Retired Tyler dentist who shot wife said he had "all he could handle"

(KYTX) - We're learning more about what happened at the Nichols home last Friday night.

Dr. Bobby Nichols was arrested for murder after confessing to police he fatally shot his wife after hours of arguing.

His wife of 26 years, Rosiland Nichols, died from two gunshot wounds to the stomach. She was laid to rest Thursday.

What happened in a Tyler home between a husband and wife of 26 years is almost hard to believe.

In previous interviews, friends said Bobby and Rosiland Nichols seemed like a couple that truly loved each other.

"They seemed happy. I never saw them argue. People don't argue in public. But I never saw them fight at all," said Dr.Rick Coker.

But, the arrest affidavit paints a very different picture. On the day Dr. Nichols shot his 71-year-old wife, he had a drink at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler around noon.

After that, the 75-year-old went to Dakota's restaurant where he had a few drinks with friends. Dr. Nichols told police he came home around five that afternoon to a wife who was very upset.

"It was sometime after that when an argument began," said Det. Doyle Lynch.

Dr. Nichols told police his wife was following him around their home for several hours nagging him about staying out on Fridays.

Rosiland asked him to leave several times, but Dr. Nichols told her he wasn't leaving his own house.

The arrest affidavit says Dr. Nichols went out to his truck and got his 9 mm handgun and put it in his pocket.

He walked back into the house and told his wife to stop arguing with him. When she didn't, he shot her two times in the stomach while she was sitting on the couch.

He said he pulled the trigger a third time, but the gun malfunctioned.

In the affidavit, Dr.Nichols said his wife said "oh hell" and clutched her stomach after he shot her.

She began gasping for air and Dr.Nichols said he tried to give her "mouth to mouth" resuscitation. Fifteen minutes later he called 911.

When police arrived, Dr. Nichols was crying and said he had ruined everyone's life in his family.

The affidavit says Dr. Nichols told police he shouldn't have killed his wife and that he would miss her.

Dr. Nichols was charged with murder in the death of his wife. He was given a $750,000 bond, but jail records show he only spent four days in jail.

He bonded out Tuesday evening.
