Web Exclusive: New adult playgrounds get people off the couch

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (CNN) - There's a new plan to get people off the couch and into exercise, outdoor gyms.  One just opened up in the Bronx by Yankee Stadium and is being called a playground for adults.

"We have too much idle time on our hands in New York City," says Emanuel Acheampon.
But this does help me stay in shape.

The playground offers outdoor workout equipment to strengthen all areas of your body.
"While there have been sort outdoor adult fitness equipment and play grounds since the 1930s - it's really in the last few years that we've started to come up with newer applications," says Adrian Benepe, NYC Parks Commissioner.

The scenery is not bad either with Yankee Stadium right there and you can watch the train.  "It's not like a gym, like an indoor gym where you hear weights dropping and you know. It's kind like you are outside; before you know it you are done with your work out," says Emanuel Acheampon.

"You got people playing basketball over there, people doing their pull-ups, push-ups and dips. At times people need to clear their thoughts. This is a great place to clear your thoughts," says Dwight Edwards.  "They really care about people making a place like this.

"This guy looks good right here. He got me out here, honestly. As bad as he looks, he got me out here," says Acheampon.  "I look a lot better than him but inside I am a little weak I am working on cardio."

"Society bears a big cost when people are not in shape or if they become ill. They are some very practical reasons for encouraging people to get excretes at parks for free," says Benepe.

"This is one of the best things ever. Just to see something like this. This is like an adult jungle gym. An adult facility. It's really a good thing to have," says Acheamponn.  "Definitely should have more of them.  Edwards says, "We let the world run out time, you have to take some time for yourself and that is what this place is all about. It's what I love about this place. I get to steal my time."

The New York City plans to create at least 20 more of these outdoor gyms throughout the city.
