TISD school board interim superintendent search begins

TYLER (KYTX) - The Tyler ISD school board must decide what's next for this district now that the superintendent is leaving. CBS 19's Amanda Roberson was there when the board members stepped out of Monday's closed meeting.

Dr. Reid and six of the seven school board members were at Monday's meeting. It's the first time the board has met since Dr. Reid's announcement last Tuesday, July 3rd. This meeting was all about starting the process of finding an interim superintendent when Dr. Reid leaves.

"We do want to make a smooth and quick transition," explained Tyler School Board President Michelle Carr. "There's a lot to do and we don't want to lose any ground."

Carr and her team have a lot to do before the new school year begins. "We plan on taking action really quickly, we'll be making some phone calls this week."

Dr. Reid has led the district for five years and was part of creating and supporting a five step plan to grow the district by 2020 building new schools and upgrading others, among other plans. That was approved in October last year.

But Carr said those plans won't fall by the wayside when Dr. Reid leaves. "We'll absolutely go forward with that. That wasn't Dr. Reid's plan, that was the board's plan for the community, for TISD. Yes, there will be no changing that."

"I just encourage the community to stay behind that plan and continue to move forward. I think it's going to be a great opportunity for Tyler," added Dr. Reid.

Dr. Reid will be superintendent at Keller ISD. He said he's been looking for a job in North Texas for the past couple of years to be closer to his family. "The school year starts and stops for the students and the staff that are there at the campuses but for the central staff it's really more of a year-round role. There's really not a good time or a bad time for that transition."

But as the transition between today's superintendent and tomorrow's interim takes place, Dr. Reid said he'll stay on Tyler's side. "We have great people on board, we have great principals on our campuses and great teachers on our campuses. I'm fully confident that they're going to move forward and have a great start to this school year."

That's exactly what Carr expects too. "We're disappointed but we know that with change comes opportunity. It's a good opportunity for him and it's a good opportunity for TISD. We'll continue to move forward."

Carr said the board will probably hire someone who has been a superintendent before. The board did not discuss specific qualities for the candidate or if they were going to hire an outside firm to help find an interim. She also said they want to do a more extensive, detailed search for the next superintendent so the interim will probably be someone that's not interested in the long term job.

While Dr. Reid will have to leave before the start of the next school year there's no official date set. That's because the Keller ISD school board has to meet Monday, July 23rd to officially vote on him as the district's next superintendent. Dr. Reid is the only candidate. Those with Tyler ISD hope to have an interim superintendent in place before he leaves.
