Orleans, MA (CNN) - A scare in the water! A kayaker says he came face to face with a great white shark off the coast of cape cod over the weekend.
Walter Szulc says he was paddling his kayak when he suddenly heard people screaming at him. He turned back to find a great white shark right behind him. The New Hampshire man said he began desperately paddling toward the beach, narrowly escaping.
Ironically, just before heading out on the water, he reassured his daughter that the chance of seeing a shark was slim.
"I was a little freaked out. It was -- it was a quick moment. I had to react. I pretty much looked at it, look down, saw the body there. I didn't see the head. I think that was under the kayak. So at that point I just paddled. Fortunately, I had plenty of practice time ."
The shark was estimated to be between 12 and 14 feet long. Experts say the sharks are being drawn to Cape Cod waters by an abundance of seals, which they eat.
