New guidelines for baby monitor cords

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Parents, a product that is likely in your baby's nursery has a hidden risk. Now the federal government and manufacturers are taking action.

Baby monitors are supposed to protect children. But the Consumer Product Safety Commission says at least seven children have died in the last decade as a result of strangulation from baby monitor cords.

When setting up a baby monitor, the CPSC and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association are urging parents to first of all check the location. You want it to be at a safe distance as the baby grows. Also, avoid placing monitors in cribs or playpens. You want them at least 3 feet away from those areas.

Put warning labels on devices with cords -- reminding any caregiver to keep it far away from children. Also, keep drape cords, window blinds and any other corded equipment out of your child's reach.
