Health Alert: Moderate drinking may cut risk of rheumatoid arthritis

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Moderate drinking may reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. A new study in the British Medical Journal finds women who regularly consume more than three alcoholic drinks a week for at least 10 years have about half the risk of developing the chronic inflammatory condition. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease. The study's authors think the alcohol lowers the body's immune response.

(CBS) - Smokers who quit may gain more weight than previously thought. A new study finds the average smoker gains a little more than 10 pounds a year after giving up cigarettes. That's more than the 6 pounds doctors usually quote. But medical experts say the health benefits of quitting far outweigh the modest weight gain.

(CBS) - Pregnant women who got the H1N1 flu vaccine during the 2009 pandemic can rest easy. A new study of babies born to those women found no increased risk of birth defects, pre-term births or smaller birth size. An estimated 2.4 million pregnant women received the vaccine in the United States alone.
