Utility bill scam sweeps the country

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- The Texas Attorney General's office wants you to beware of a new utility bill scam that's sweeping the country.

The scam claims the Obama Administration is providing financial assistance to help pay for your utility bills.

Customers are told they must give out their social security and bank routing numbers. There is no such program or federal money available.

"Absolutely, protect that information," Better Business Bureau of East Texas Olga Maldragon said. "Do not release that information. That could result in identity theft, which could cause a major headache."

Be suspicious of solicitors, fliers, phone calls, and text messages trying to offer this payment assistance.

Even if you fall for this scam, you are still ultimately responsible for paying your own utility bill.
