Director of Rehab Center speaks out on abrupt closure

Posted: Updated:

TYLER, TEXAS (KYTX) - New information on the rehab center for kids that suddenly shut down.

The former director is talking to CBS19 about what's next for staff and parents. Even he says he didn't have a clue it was coming.

"It was immediate and devastating for families of employees, for families of children we were serving. Nothing can really prepare you for that, and we were operating as usual," Drew Boring, ex-director of Ellis Rehab, said.

Boring confirms David Ellis, the owner, shut down the centers in Tyler and Athens due to financial hardships. "We were getting denials from companies like Medicaid for a lot of kids we were serving," Boring said.

But when things took a turn for the worst, he believes everyone was surprised. "I think it was sudden for the owner as well, because we had just made some hires," Boring said.

With no one at the company answering phones, he wants parents to know they won't be left in the cold. "They will receive the information they need as far as records for their children, so they can take those and carry them with them to the new provider," Boring said.

Those medical records are essential to giving the next therapist an idea of what treatments worked for the child.

And Boring remains optimistic for both staff and parents. "They will get served. And I think the therapists will find work," he said.
