TYLER (KYTX) -- "Stand Strong for Tyler " has a big job on its hands, verifying more than 7,000 signatures on alcohol petitions the city handed over this afternoon.
The city released the petitions based on precedent. Dallas did the same in a similar situation.
The city worried it could harm elected officials who signed the petition if personal information like addresses got out into the public.
The opposition group, which doesn't want alcohol sales on the November ballot, plans to verify each signature on its own even though city workers are doing the same.
"Group of people sitting in a room, validate signatures by voter IDs, names, addresses, phone numbers and calling these people to confirm they did actually sign those documents to make sure all the signatures are authentic," Stand Strong For Tyler's Deon Williams said.
The signatures must be verified by next Friday to make it on the ballot.
