BROWNSBORO (KYTX) - Some Brownsboro students are taking what they've learned about Christianity's origins, and they're bringing it to life.
They're taking bible study to a whole new level. The kids and other members of Rock Hill Baptist Church have created a life size replica of the Ark of the Covenant.
Tom Williams, the Chairman of Deacons for Rock Hill Baptist Church in Brownsboro is a supervisor for the project. He says, "The young men are called Jarheads and the young women are called Soul Sisters. They're recreating an exact replica of the Ark of the Covenant and all the things that go along with that."
17-year-old Brownsboro student Patrick McCarthy has been in charge of building the Ark.
"I can honestly say it's been a real life changer," McCarthy says. "When I started going there I was a skeptic, and just recently it's touched me. It's amazing."
As the students build, they learn.
"The Ark represents the presence of God in the Old Testament," Williams says. "Inside the Ark of the Covenant is the Ten Commandments which was the law of God, also a golden jar of manna which represents his provision, and then the staff of Aaron which butted out representing the future coming of Jesus Christ and the new life that we have in him."
Both the students and their supervisors say doing things hands on to learn about their religion is better than just simply reading scripture.
"It's one thing to read it," Williams says. "It's another thing to read it and then construct it with your hands."
"We do a lot of interactive hands on type stuff and it's a lot easier to comprehend when we do that," McCarthy says.
McCarthy says that hands on perspective has been eye-opening.
"I thought it was going to be bigger! It's amazing to know that something so small has so much meaning."
18-year-old Brownsboro student Linda Howard says the project has already changed her.
"It's really great working for something that you believe in, something that you love. I think it's amazing," she says.
As they continue to learn about the foundation of Christianity, they will also build a strong base for their faith.
The total cost to build the Ark is about $3,000.
The group works on it about 30 minutes each Sunday. The finished product should be ready by next June when their church family moves to a new facility. When they do move, they will do a march together with their community to the new church location.
