Three killed, several injured after weekend lightning strikes

Posted: Updated:

EAST TEXAS (KYTX) -- Severe storms across the U.S. and Canada turned deadly over the weekend. At least three people have been killed and several others injured by lightning strikes since Friday.

Three Men's Soccer League players were struck by lightning in Harris County, Texas while taking shelter under trees Sunday.

One died at the scene. A second was pronounced dead at a hospital. A third was in stable condition.

Also Sunday, lightning struck a dining tent at a ribfest in the Canadian Province of Ontario.

Seventeen people there were taken to hospitals with various injuries -- none of which were considered life-threatening. It was a chaotic scene at the festival, which drew thousands of people.

And two men were standing under a tree at a lake in the Atlanta area Friday when a lightning strike knocked them to the ground. The shock was enough to send one of them into cardiac arrest, eventually killing him.

He leaves behind a big family, including nine children.

The other man in the Georgia incident regained consciousness as emergency crews tended to him. His condition is unknown.

The chances of getting hit by lightning in a year is one in a million. And the odds of getting hit during a lifetime is one in 10,000.
