It's Time Texas: Bodybuilding competition comes to Tyler

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) TYLER -  A lot of people turn to running to get in shape, but it's not for everybody.  Some people prefer lifting weights and sculpting their bodies.

In CBS 19's It's Time Texas report, A new competition is coming to Tyler this weekend just for those folks.

When you think of body-building, famous competitors like Arnold Schwarzenegger might come to mind, but there are East Texans training right now for an all natural competition in Tyler.

"It is just the discipline and setting the goal and the satisfaction I get from getting as lean and defined as I can with what God has given me," says Martha Munroe.

Martha Munroe competed in her first contest 3 years ago at the age of 37.  She gets her body ready with strength training, cardio and by eating right.  "Diet is huge.  Diet is probably the biggest part of it.  I cut out all of the breads, all of the pastas."

It was an addiction to fast food that brought Alicia Bergin to bodybuilding a few years ago.  "It gives you a goal of how to get through your life and be fit. I wanted to show Tyler that you can be fit through body building. You don't have to always have to run or do crossfit," says Alicia Bergin, owner Purebody Nutrition.

Alicia and her husband, will, own Purebody Nutrition and decided to bring the bodybuilding competition event to Tyler.  "We have people coming out of the woodworks... we have a lot of first timers who have never done it before."

Some veterans to the sport are also signed up for the competition.  Mark Childers started weight training in the 80's.  He finally got the nerve to compete in his first bodybuilding competition 4 years ago.  "I got down to a certain percentage of body fat and I have never looked that way before. It was really exhilarating.  It was really just a competition with myself, kind of like a runner in a 5 or 10k run," says Mark Childers.

What the competitors are most proud of is every muscle was sculpted naturally.

The competition is this Saturday at Caldwell auditorium.  Pre-judging starts at 10 a.m. and the finals are at 6 p.m.
