MARSHALL (KYTX) -- An elderly woman in Harrison County is behind bars in connection with a shooting last week that left her husband with head injuries. The man, Hubert White, did survive, and we're told he has been released from the hospital. CBS 19's Abby Broyles joins us now from the Harrison County Courthouse with new information in the case.
79-year-old Bonnie Hooper is in jail tonight on a $250,000 bond. She was arraigned here in Harrison County Monday. Tonight, we're learning more about Ms. Hooper's past. Investigators say Hooper actually attacked a Harrison County deputy last year. No charges were filed then, but now she is facing charges for allegedly shooting her husband.
Harrison County deputies showed up to a home last Thursday on this remote private road in the southeastern part of the county. Investigators say bonnie Hooper called 911 from the home on private road 1228, saying she was trying to get away from her husband.
"She was barricaded in the house at one time, there was obvious barricading of the bedroom door, and when the deputies did arrive at the location she was outside the house," Harrison County Deputy Jay Webb said.
Inside, deputies say they found Hooper's husband, 60-year old Hubert Dean White, on the kitchen floor shot in the head.
"As deputies got there the story kind of changed a bit and turned out to be that she and her husband had been in a physical and verbal confrontation the previous night," Deputy Webb said.
Investigators say the couple had wrestled with a gun and at this point, they think Hooper fired at White. That was Wednesday. Hooper didn't call 911 until Thursday. Deputies arrested Hooper, and paramedics took white to the hospital.
Last September, the sheriff's department says another domestic disturbance call came from the couple's home, and Ms.. Hooper didn't cooperate.
"There was a deputy that had a little wrestling match with her and at that time, no charged were filed, any kind of assault charges," Deputy Webb says, "sometimes you just have to wrestle occasionally to get somebody to comply."
Now 79-year old Hooper sits in the Harrison County jail, charged with aggravated assault family violence.
The Harrison County Sheriff's Department is still investigating. Because of her age, we're told ms. Hooper is being held in a particular area of the jail for medical supervision. We're told she doesn't have an attorney yet, and a court date has not been set.
