(KYTX) - A horrifying 24 hours for pregnant kidnapping victim Tiffany Hurd- brought to an end by a brave officer.
Lieutenant Michael Gray with Galveston Police says Officer Chris Sanderson is to thank for the arrest of kidnapping and murder suspect Jackie Guthrie Friday night.
"Officer Sanderson just sees it as another day at work and is just glad that he can do his job." Lt. Gray said.
A news viewer recognized Guthrie's face after spotting him at a convenience store and called Galveston Police.
Sanderson found Guthrie and Tiffany at 30th Street and Seawall Boulevard. Officer Sanderson called for back up, knowing Guthrie would be armed. He came up with a way to safely sneak up on him.
"He hid his vehicle and used other buildings and vehicles to conceal his approach until he was able to get within 20 feet of the suspect without him knowing it." said Lt. Gray. "At that point, he drew down on him and gave him commands to get on the ground."
Gray says Guthrie refused to surrender until Tiffany Hurd convinced him to cooperate, saying she wanted to go home to her mother.
"After everything calmed down, I was really happy because I didn't think I was going to get to see her anymore." said Hurd.
Now Hurd and her unborn daughter are safe and Galveston Police are proud of Officer Sanderson's hard work.
During Guthrie's arrest, Officer Sanderson found a loaded 9 mm hand gun that is believed to be involved in Chantel Barret's shooting. Police also found Guthrie's car nearby.
Guthrie was brought back to Henderson County Monday at 1 p.m.
