Tyler alcohol opposition wants more time

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- The group opposing closed-container alcohol sales, Stand Strong for Tyler, is asking for more time to review petitions and signatures following the city's own review.

The group claims the city missed some invalid signatures during its original review. The city says it followed the lawful five-step verification process and stands behind the initial decision that alcohol supporters gathered enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot.

"Ultimately, regardless of whether we want this to pass or don't want it to pass, Texas' legislature has created a local option wet/dry situation," City of Tyler Attorney Gary Landers said.

The Tyler City Council is scheduled to vote on whether to put alcohol on the ballot at 9:00 Wednesday morning. Stand Strong will be protesting at City Hall at 8:30.
